A little labour is all that is needed to have happy hands. It doesn’t help to just splash on colour if your nails are not in good condition. To prevent them from chipping, keep your nails either oval or square but never pointed. If you file them low in the sides or corners, it will weaken them. So gently file them in one long stroke. The perfect length that suits practically everyone is just over the tip. Use a conditioning cream every evening to help seal moisture into the nails so that they do not split or flake. For a cheap alternative, use a tiny bit of olive oil. Don’t ever cut cuticles with a pair of scissors coz this will lead to an infection of the nail bed. Soak them in warm soapy water instead to soften the cuticles. Then use a little cuticle softening cream and push them back with a cotton bud or a manicure hoof stick. You can scrub away dead skin that still remains.

Top Ten Nail Tips

1. Don’t use acetone as this will strip your nails of moisture. Use conditioning removers instead.
2. Paint nail polish under the tip of your nails. This gives extra strength to very weak nails.
3. Remember to use hand cream every time you wash your hands.
4. Wear rubber gloves while doing the dishes as exposure to water is the most common cause of soft weak nails.
5. To dry wet nails instantly — Plunge them in ice cold water.
6. Scratch a bar of soap before doing gardening or any messy work. Dirt won’t be able to get in.
7. Tear a little filter paper and glue it on to your nail to deal with a chipped nail. You can then buff it and apply polish once it is dry.
8. Brushing a little toothpaste to ink stains really helps.
9. Nails are at their weakest after a bath. So don’t ever file them then.
10. To clean under your nails, use a cotton bud instead of a nailbrush. It’s gentler.

Colour Coding

Long fingers can carry off any colour, even dramatic shades like burgundies, deep reds and russets. Beige toned or other pale shades of polish should be used on short nails. Broad nails also look their best with pale colours. It is possible though to make nails look narrower by leaving some space on the sides unpainted. If you love nude shades but would still prefer something exotic, try a pearly polish. If strong colours just don’t suit you but you would still like a hint of colour then paint your toe nails that shade instead. Try mixing some black nail polish with a little dark red, the resultant colour looks very sophisticated on bare feet. For tanned skin, pearlised formulations and coral nail paint work wonders.

Note: The French Manicure.

One look that seems never to go out of style is the French manicure. Not only does it make your nails look fresh clean and healthy, but it also happens to match any makeup that you wear.
