To understand the trends of this year, it is important to look at the trends of 2007.

Collaboration of Artists and Designers

Designers turned to artists for help and inspiration last year. Everyone wanted an edge. The vision was there bit everything needed a little toning up. Richard Prince was sought out by Marc Jacobs. He was also helped by Takshai Murakami. The backdrops for the spring show by Prada were created by Rem Koolhaas and so were his designs used for the party afterwards.

Eco Clothing

Levis launched eco clothes with even recycled buttons and zips. They used natural indigo as a dye. Loomstate, Stella McCartney, Theory, Philip Lim, and Lutz and Patmos did exclusive clothing lines that were environment friendly for Barney’s. Levi’s too started an eco line in various price ranges and styles too. All the accessories were made out of recycled stuff and even the dyes were natural.

Fringes

They were not only seen on the ramps and runways, but also on the red carpet. Michelle Pfeiffer wore them in Scarface and everyone followed her. Kate Moss was seen in them throughout the year and has carried the trend into this year.

Turbans

When turbans were introduced by Prada, people wondered if this trend would ever go mainstream. It just didn’t seem practical, and therefore, ridiculed. But when Mary Kate Olsen, Beyoncé, and Naomi Campbell embraced it, the world followed.

Cheery Colours

Colour was splashed around. Accessories and clothing were now bright and chirpy.
Oranges were vibrant and pinks were hot. Bold fuchsias, crisp greens, and vivid teals made their entrance.
Jil sander and Raf Simmons focused on these colours for most of their collections last year.

Flipped Out Eyeliner ala Amy Winehouse

This style would even make Cleopatra proud. The lines became long and thick, extending right upto the temples. The cat eyed look was in.

Burlesque Revival

The burlesque look was back with a bang last year. There was a new interest in the form of a woman. Garter belts and corsets ruled. Figures were more hour glass and the look glamorous and retro. Vintage was now modern and lingerie labels like Montparnasse and Agent Provocateur focused on fetish.

Demure Dressing

Women were conservative. Skirts went mid calf and not mini. Heels were now lace ups and necklines were no longer low. Katie Holmes was not just Tom Cruise darling but the masses’ darling too with her ladylike dressing. Starlets who wanted to improve their reputation and image went with this look too.

Anniversary Parties

All the greatest designers ever celebrated big time. It was Valentino’s 45th year and he celebrated it over three days in Rome. It was Ralph Lauren’s 40th year and he sure let everyone know that. It was also Calvin Klein’s mark for 25 years of their underwear line. Christian Dior celebrated their 60th year with flamenco dancers and a choir of gospels singers.

Going Global

Stores were opened all over the world and shows were held at the most unusual places. The first Giorgio Armani store in Tokyo was opened. Ralph Lauren opened its first Moscow branch and Karl Lagerfeld had a runway show right atop the Great Wall of China.
