You do not need to spend a bomb at the hair dressers for prom night. You want perfect hair but that usually comes at a price. With a little extra preparation, it is possible to have the hair you want right at home.

Do not wait for prom night to give it the full treatment. Give yourself an intensive conditioning at least a week in advance. If you do it on D Day, you just might end up with hair that is not exactly easy to manage. It will be slippery and greasy and will not hold the style you desire. Pins will not stay and it will also be resilient to a curling process. Your hair needs to have life as well as being soft. So skip the conditioning on the night and just style it straight away.

Since this might just be the biggest night of your school life, you obviously want it to be perfect. You need to experiment and try many different styles well in advance if you want to hit the right notes. Try each hairstyle with your dress to see if it goes well with it or not. The hair might look great in the magazine on the model but it might not necessarily look as great on you. You face shape might be different so you need to take that into consideration and work on it. You need to try it out on yourself first. Don’t just rely on the picture and wait till the last moment to do your hair. Once you have decided the style, do not go and get a dramatic cut afterwards. Get together with friends and try different hairstyles on each other. You need to figure out what exactly you like and do not like and then work on it.

Not going to a stylist has its perks. Your hair is in your hands and it will end up being what you want it to be. Many a times, people fall victim to the hairdresser’s whims. There have been instances where the person does exactly what he or she wants and doesn’t listen to the customer. So in a way you can control your destiny. You will want to go with a classic look that is easy to do and is not a time waster. A knot or a bunch of curls pinned up accessorised with big shiny clips are dressy as well as easy peasy.

While deciding on a hairstyle, make sure it is convertible. You do not want fancy hair throughout the night. There are usually after prom parties and it is not exactly convenient to maintain your hair then. So if you pin your curls for the main dance, it is easy to unpin them, ruffle your hair, and tie it with a simple ribbon for a late night snack.

The last thing to remember is to always be prepared. You never know what hair emergency you could get into. Always carry hair ties and bobby pins with you. Also remember to cram a little tube of gloss into your purse to tame cowlicks and unwanted frizz in a jiffy.
