Buying baby clothes can be a confusing thing for people around the world. Styles vary to such an extent that every mother wants her kid to look unique. The competition starts young. Parents even want their babies to stand out! It can be difficult to strike a balance impulse and need, comfort and fashion, cute and practical, and daywear and night wear. All this decides the factors like quantity, quality, and such others while buying baby clothing.

To make things worse, parents are faced with an added problem. Babies grow really quickly. A week day old baby and a month old baby are totally different in size. That is when you buy baby clothes, it is not meant to fit only now but for months thereafter. So, buying clothes that are a few sizes bigger at least, are needed. So when going on a shopping spree, remember the ‘rule of three’. Babies basically need three types of clothes. Day wear, sleep wear, and clothes meant for going out. Sleep wear is needed the most. Since babies practically sleep through their infancy, it only makes sense to buy a lot of sleepwear. But how does a person decide how much to decide to buy of each category. That depends on how often you do your laundry and that depends on how much free time do you get to do it with a full time job of taking care of the baby. You need to decide how dirty you are willing to let your kid before changing his or her clothes.

Day Wear

Day wear need only one criterion to be kept in mind- comfort. Since the baby is going to be wearing this most of the time, it can not be helped but get dirty. Dribble and spilled milk are bound to always be there on the clothes. And as your kid learns to crawl and then walk with time, clothes will get soiled no matter what with all the constant contact with the floor. That is why you might not feel comfortable dressing your kid up in ‘special’ clothes during the day. So clothes that have been gifted by near ones and anything with sentimental value should not be worn on the kid during the day since it is bound to wear and tear. The safest and the best clothes would be body suits. This a one piece dress that covers the entire body at one. It protects the baby from getting nicked, scraped, and cut as well as providing comfort. You must have at least five to ten body suits since there might be emergencies wherein you might need to change the baby’s clothes in the middle of the day.

Sleepwear

Dressing is usually the same even during the night. If it gets cold at night, get warmer suits in woolen or other such fabrics but if the weather usually is stable and does not change so regularly, you will not need to do special shopping.

Outdoor

This is when it is time to make an impression. You need to be practical though while the baby is still a baby. You do not want to end up making her or him uncomfortable. It should not interfere with the diaper changing process either so clothes should not be elaborate. By the age of one year though you could go ‘all out’ and get those bows and lace that you have been dying to dress up your kid in.
