We might feel that hair extensions are a very recent invention and addition to the fashion world but they have been there for ages. In ancient Egypt, wigs were worn by women and men alike. And hair extensions have been around since.
Wearing fake hair was not considered a good thing in the 1800s. It was preferred that women leave their hair long and natural. Wigs and extensions were frowned upon. It was only in the Romantic Era when it became the norm. Women were seen sporting large and complicated Apollo knots. If we fast forward to the Victorian era, we see that hair extensions and pieces were worn a lot more. These pieces were used to create elaborate hairstyles that were not possible with normal hair. It was also a boon to women with thinning hair. The next phase in history when hair additions were used was in the early 20th century. Women used them to create pompadour hairstyles. Though it looked terrible (it resembled a tea pot on the head), it was strangely enough, popular.
By the 1920, hair took a backseat. Hair was without volume. Having a lot of hair was not considered cool. It was only during the 40s that it returned. And by the 1960s, hair was bigger than it was ever before. It could be said that people went overboard with the big hair thing, but it was considered fashionable then. This was the first time though that hair pieces were commercially made out of human hair. Till then almost all extensions were fake. Coils were the most popular attachments to create different updos. The look eased its way into the 1970s but in the 80s, it was back to natural hair. The only people who wore wigs then were probably singers to look good in their music videos. Everyone wanted volume in their hair though.
By the 90s, hair extensions became more affordable. Victoria Beckham was seen in a different hairstyle practically everyday. It was all due to hair extension, wigs, and hair pieces. She and her husband David Beckham were the ‘in’ couple then who were constantly photographed. She was the first to say that her extensions were made from human. That created a mini scandal as to the origins of the hair. But after Victoria Beckham sported them; they became very popular among women, young and old. Young girls who wanted longer hair loved this option. On the other hand, older women who were constantly worrying about their hair thinning loved them too.
Permanent extensions last about four months and cost a couple of hundred pounds at least. Hair is glued onto your natural hair but the wax or glue used is harmful to your scalp and natural hair. To remove the extensions, chemicals are used which add further damage to the hair. Weaving or wafting the hair on is a safer option though if a person really is desperate for added hair. Clip-ons are good for temporary looks and are safe. They come in many colours in various lengths. These are the safest and most popular version of extending the hair.
